National Cervical Cancer Prevention Program

With its commitment to health promotion and prevention, Kosmoiatriki supports all related initiatives and actively participates in the National Cervical Cancer Prevention Program. Beneficiaries of the cervical cancer prevention program are entitled to a free Pap Test.

Important Information about Cervical Cancer
The vast majority of cervical cancer cases are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Through free preventive screenings, we can identify potential pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions as well as HPV types before they lead to any abnormalities. This approach ensures more effective prevention.

Beneficiaries of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Program
Women aged 21 to 29 who have not undergone a Pap Test or HPV-DNA Test in the last three (3) calendar years are eligible for:

  • A gynecological consultation and Pap Test.
  • If specific findings emerge from the Pap Test, they may also receive a colposcopy and biopsy.

Beneficiaries who are registered for paperless prescriptions will receive their referral via SMS or email. Those who are not registered can retrieve their referral using their Social Security Number (AMKA).

Women who were screened in the previous year are not recommended to undergo the same examination within the current year. However, if there are specific reasons for repeating the test, it can still be performed under EOPYY guidelines.

The National Preventive Screening Program (NPSP) issues electronic referrals that are valid for six months.

It is crucial for all beneficiaries of the cervical cancer prevention program to take advantage of these free preventive screenings and participate in the program. Early detection significantly improves the effectiveness and ease of treatment.

Cervical Cancer Prevention

Cervical cancer poses a serious threat to women’s health worldwide. It is primarily caused by infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is mainly transmitted through sexual contact. The risks associated with cervical cancer include its progressive spread to nearby organs, leading to severe health problems such as bleeding, pain, and difficulties in urination or defecation. If left untreated, it can result in death.

Preventing cervical cancer is vital and can be achieved through various methods. Regular preventive screenings, including the Pap Test and colposcopy, are central tools for early diagnosis and prevention.

Colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure where the doctor uses a specialized instrument called a colposcope to closely examine the cervix. This process allows for the identification of early abnormalities that could indicate the presence of pre-cancerous or cancerous cells.

Early detection through colposcopy enables immediate treatment of abnormal cells before they develop into cancer. Women at higher risk, such as those with a history of HPV or abnormal Pap Test results, are advised to undergo regular colposcopies.

In summary, prevention through regular check-ups, Pap Tests, and colposcopies, combined with HPV vaccination, provides the best defense against cervical cancer, ensuring the health and well-being of women.
