With CT coronary angiography, the visualization of the anatomy of the coronary vessels, the calculation of the degree of calcification of the walls of the arteries, the existence or not of atheromatous lesions as well as the degree of narrowing of the vessels is achieved . The average sensitivity of the test ( that is, to detect the truly sick ) reaches 97.2% and the specificity ( that is, the truly negative results ) reaches 84.7% to 87%. Based on these data, the test has a very good predictive value and accuracy .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Indications <\/strong>for the examination are:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exclusion of significant lumenal stenoses in stable patients with&nbsp;<strong>suspected<\/strong>&nbsp;coronary stenoses but&nbsp;<strong>intermediate probability<\/strong>&nbsp;of disease before examination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exclusion of coronary artery disease in acute&nbsp;chest&nbsp;<strong>pain .<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coronary&nbsp;<strong>anomalies.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blocking stenosis before&nbsp;<strong>non-<\/strong>&nbsp;coronary surgery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determining the&nbsp;<strong>patency<\/strong>&nbsp;of coronary artery bypass grafts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of computed tomography as&nbsp;<strong>an alternative method<\/strong>&nbsp;when cardiac catheterization is&nbsp;<strong>impossible<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>carries a high risk<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clarification&nbsp;<strong>of equivocal findings<\/strong>&nbsp;after interventional angiography.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing&nbsp;<strong>perioperative<\/strong>&nbsp;information for percutaneous coronary intervention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assessment of&nbsp;coronary artery&nbsp;<strong>stent patency .<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determination of the&nbsp;<strong>presence<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>extent<\/strong>&nbsp;of coronary atherosclerotic plaque.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Contraindications<\/strong> for the examination are divided into absolute and relative :<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Absolute contraindication<\/strong>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<strong>allergy-anaphylaxis<\/strong>&nbsp;to iodinated contrast agents and&nbsp;<strong>pregnancy<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Related contraindications<\/strong>&nbsp;are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>History&nbsp;<strong>of allergies<\/strong>&nbsp;to drugs or other substances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Renal dysfunction<\/strong>&nbsp;with creatinine&nbsp;<strong>&gt;1.5&nbsp;mg&nbsp;\/&nbsp;dl<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Congestive<\/strong>&nbsp;heart failure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>History&nbsp;<strong>of thromboembolic<\/strong>&nbsp;events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Multiple myeloma<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unregulated&nbsp;<strong>hyperthyroidism<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Phaeochromocytoma<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Atrial fibrillation<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inability to hold breath<\/strong>&nbsp;for at least 15 seconds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Obesity<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; high body mass index.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ectosystolic ventricular arrhythmia<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anemia<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Active infection<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tachycardia<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>History of receiving large amounts&nbsp;<strong>of radiation<\/strong>&nbsp;from previous examinations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Possible&nbsp;<strong>side effects<\/strong>&nbsp;of the test may be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nausea.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Urticaria.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Difficulty breathing.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Redness.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Itching.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Burden of renal biochemistry.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Radiation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udca1Necessary conditions<\/strong>&nbsp;for the examination are::<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Not<\/strong>&nbsp;consuming food and liquids a few hours before the examination.&nbsp;Especially&nbsp;<strong>energy drinks<\/strong>&nbsp;,&nbsp;<strong>coffee<\/strong>&nbsp;,&nbsp;<strong>tea<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Coca-Cola<\/strong>&nbsp;should&nbsp;<strong>not<\/strong>&nbsp;be consumed for at least&nbsp;<strong>12 hours<\/strong>&nbsp;before the examination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The removal of all&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>metal objects<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Placement of&nbsp;<strong>a venous line<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The use of&nbsp;<strong>iodide contrast agent<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong>low<\/strong>&nbsp;heart rate and possibly the use of drugs for this purpose such as&nbsp;<strong>\u03b2-blockers.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Possibly vasodilating substances such as&nbsp;<strong>nitrites<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The examinee&#8217;s cooperation<\/strong>&nbsp;by holding his breath whenever asked, which can reach up to 20 seconds at a time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It should be noted that the level of&nbsp;<strong>radiation<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; depends to a great extent on the&nbsp;<strong>type<\/strong>&nbsp;, the&nbsp;<strong>generation<\/strong>&nbsp;of the CT scanner, on the&nbsp;<strong>technique<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>methodology<\/strong>&nbsp;of the examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CT coronary angiography is nowadays a powerful diagnostic tool but also a very good prognostic factor, slowly surpassing the other tests in the hierarchy, offering high diagnostic accuracy in a short examination time, with minimal risk, without particular discomfort for the examinee and with ever-improving cost-benefit for both the patient and the health system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong><strong><em><u>By Nikolaos Alexopoulos,<\/u>\u00a0Doctor &#8211;
